Best Deals in Kona - Day 1 Honokohau-Kaloko Kukio Pine Tree Cafe
This is the first in a series I am calling Best Deals in Kona. I will be sharing tips from a local about the Kona area and the surrounding areas. If there is enough interest I can add Hilo, Kohala, Hamakua, and Volcano.
Day 1
Start the day at Kona Coffee and Tea on Palani. Kona is the best coffee in the world so you should start your day with a cup. They open at 6am.
A hike in Honokohau-Kaloko National Historial Park is the perfect place to find calm waters and catch honu (sea turtles). They open at 8:30 so plan to get there early in hopes to beat the heat. This park is free, no pass required.
After your hike head to 808Grindz for great and affordable local dishes. They are open 7-2pm. Bring cash, no cards accepted. Get a Spam Moko for $13!
I recommend an afternoon spent relaxing at Kukio Golf Club beach. Passes are limited so if you show up to a full beach, ask for directions to the Hualalai access. Often you can find monk seals sleeping on the beach or honu eating in the coral along the grassy area. Bring snorkel gear. This is also a great place for younger children as there is a protected keiki pond. Stay until sunset.
Pine Tree Cafe is a great dinner spot as long as you catch them before they close at 7pm. Get the Fried Poke or Chicken Teriyaki Musubi. If you are in Kona in the summer months and sunset is close or after 7pm, Rainbow Cafe is open until 8pm. They serve a variety of Asian dishes.
That is a full day. Check back soon for more tips!
As always, if you want a great place to stay, there are affordable options at Guard Well Farm. Check out the calendar for the Tiny Home and Coffee Stay to see availability and contact us for direct booking rates.
